The Tenth Week

Monday, 10/21

Today, we did another journal. I really enjoy journals. I like the way the quietness envelopes the room as they take the time to think and write out their thoughts. This journal was about why they had chosen their three possible organizations. I heavily emphasized the necessity to have more than one organization as an option because of the interview. A lot of my students have expressed worry about performing the interview as well as contacting the organization.

I wish I would have prepared more information and things for them to choose organizations. Having a list of active organizations that have responded in the past would be helpful, I think, for instructors to give their students for this unit. I am a little worried myself that some of their choices aren't going to pan out...

After the journal, we discussed the scavenger hunt plan for Wednesday and the difference between showing and telling. This is a lesson that I was excited to share because it is something that we learn in Creative Writing. I liked having my creative writing background because I think it allowed me to feel more confident in the material, which helped me feel comfortable giving more fun and creative activity.

Today is the Scavenger Hunt. We met for about 15 minutes before I released them across the campus. They had to describe a statue or site on campus without telling their peers what it was on a post in the discussion board. I wanted to include some of their descriptions and their photos in today's journal.

Katelynn W. - a black shiny statue of a man dressed in overalls with a hat to block out the sun, along with a bag in one hand and another bag across his chest.
Hannah W. - Elegant metal statue of a girl doing attitude turn in a dress near the fine arts buildings.
Emily P. - A golden statue of a bull pulling a girl in a covered wagon, and the girl is looking at the football stadium.
John H. - An all-white statue of a man standing holding a paper. Hidden within a wall around north campus.

Those are only some of their posts, but I really enjoyed reading their descriptions and looking at their funny selfies. They had to take selfies with the statues/sites in order for me to have proof that they completed the scavenger hunt, since I didn't walk around with them.

My students LOVED this activity. I think it was because they weren't confined to the classroom, which is something I think I will want to incorporate more of in the future.
