Monday 9/9
We read Shitty First Drafts by Anne Lamott today. I really enjoyed the article/essay; it's helped me understand revision in clearer terms, so I hope it helps my little Raccoons...
Okay, I went and taught them. Here's the jist of the day: Have you ever heard of that room up in some northern state of the United States, where it's so quiet you can hear your own blood thundering in your ears? I think I'd rather be in there than in the quiet of my classroom. It is soooo awkward! WhY wOn't ThEY SPeAk?
I know they're tired, and I'm tired, and that certainly isn't the best combination, but, shouldn't they at least speak a little bit? It's like pulling teeth in that room. I've decided I'm going to write their names on notecards and brandish them like a weapon to call on people. I'm sure that I'll probably chicken out when it comes to actually calling on them, but, hopefully, it will work as an intimidation tactic or something.
Wednesday 9/11
Well, in order to get them to read Kurt Vonnegut's How to Write with Style, we had to go over it, word-for-word, in class, which was a little (or a lot) annoying. But, I know it's because I'm soft and I've already broadcasted my flexibility in terms of doing homework and effort on assignments. I'm going to try and toughen up; I think it would be better for them anyway, if I'm not so soft all the time.
Friday 9/13
Before Class: Friday the Thirteenth is upon us! It is a grand day! I am excited about trying a different peer-review method, with I Heard, I noticed, I wondered. I liked it when we practiced it during teaching orientation, so I hope it will go over well during class. They've been revising practically this whole week and I really hope they are getting better. I've been switching up the partners as much as I can with students who refuse to give opinions on whether they'd like to move or stay in their one spot. I think I offer them too many choices and that I need to just start choosing for them. I know what is best for them, and I need to recognize that. I am in-charge, and I'm the most educated person in the room, even if I'm not the smartest. I know what to do and what will work, in terms of our material, and I think I just need to recognize that.
We're also going to go over MLA and citations, which I have a feeling will be a bit of a struggle throughout the semester. (Note from Future-Self: You're right, lol.) We're going to discuss strategies for revising a draft and how to account for feedback when you are in the process of revision. Revision, as a concept that requires thought and complexity, seems foreign to my little Raccoons. Hopefully, they will figure it out today!
After Class: Friday the Thirteenth in-fucking-deed. All I have to say is this ghost gif.
